LG Nexus 5 Has Dark Side Too But Quick Fixes Kept Complaints At Bay

The LG Nexus 5 has busted out onto the market with KitKat 4.4 and optical image stabilisation on its camera. It’s one of the best devices out there, but it’s not without its fair (as it were) share of software and hardware problems.

Wi-Fi is a problem – users are complaining that their connections are dropping as soon as they move a short way away from their home routers. If this is affecting you, try this:

One. Enable Airplane mode then turn the device off, or toggle the Wi-Fi on and off to reset the connection.

Two. Reboot the device to reset and refresh the entire system.

Three. Turn off your Wi-Fi router for 10 seconds then turn it back on again.

Four. In the Nexus 5 Settings menu, chose Wireless and networks > Wi-Fi > disconnect from the network then reconnect and enter the right details.

Five. Update the firmware of the Wi-Fi router by checking the website from your Internet Service Provider’s manual.

Six. Change the band on your device. Head to Settings > Wireless and networks > Wi-Fi > Menu key > Advance > Wi-Fi frequency band > Try 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz only instead of Auto.

Uncheck the Avoid Poor Connections option as well, which may improve Wi-Fi connectivity.

Seven. Download the Wi-Fi Analyser app to see if there’s any problems on the crowded channel.

There are also complaints about the camera, which is slow to auto-focus. There’s also shutter lag and blurred photos. You can try to update to Jelly bean 4.4.1 or KitKat 4.4.4. Head to Settings > About Phone > System Update to do this.

Then there’s the overheating when playing games. This is thought to be due to the high graphics rendering. Some phones have achieved temperatures of 50C! Here are some possible solutions:

One. Play graphics-heavy games in well-ventilated places, with air-conditioning or a fan to cool the phone down.

Two. Never place the Nexus 5 in direct sunlight as this can damage internal parts.

Three. Never leave it inside a car to avoid excessive heat and damage to the battery.

Four. Don’t play high graphics gaming while recharging (recharging heats up the phone) unless your area is very cool.

Five. If tasks aren’t intensive and the phone still overheats, visit your nearest service centre and ask for a replacement, as the problem may be a factory defect.
