Samsung Galaxy S3 KitKat Update Available Manually Too (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile)

Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S3 will interested to hear that they can make the update to KitKat 4.4.2 if they have the GT-i9300 version on AT&T, T-Mobile, US Cellular or Verizon. The updated is based on the Android Open Kang Project and comes with features including navigation ring, ribbon shortcuts and LED control.

The ROM has been based on the AOKP custom one and this offers the default source code along with features of Google and developers tweaks. Owners who want to install the ROM can check out the requirements and installation steps below.

Requirements
1. Use the AOKP custom ROM to an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S3 only.
2. Create a manual backup of all personal information, settings and data files stored on the smartphone.
3. Make sure that the battery level is at least 50 percent.
4. Enabled USB debugging mode on your Galaxy S3 found in Developer Options under Settings.
5. Download the necessary USB drivers for your device on the computer.
6. Root and install a custom recovery such as ClockworkMod recovery on the handset.
7. Download the AOKP Android 4.4.2 KitKat and Google Apps package to your computer. Select from the list of firmware below appropriate for your Galaxy S3 model:
a. International GT-I9300
b. AT&T SGH-I747
c. T-Mobile SGH T999
d. U.S. Cellular GT-I9308
e. Verizon SCH-I535

Flashing Instructions

1. Connect the Samsung Galaxy S3 to your computer using a USB cable.
2. Copy and paste the appropriate firmware and Google Apps package to the microSD card of your smartphone. Do not extract the zip files.
3. Disconnect your Galaxy S3 from the computer.
4. Switch the smartphone off.
5. Reboot into recovery mode by pressing and holding power + menu + volume up keys at the same time till the Samsung logo appears.
6. Inside the recovery mode, create a nAndroid backup of the current ROM. Select “backup and restore > backup.” You can restore it anytime you desire to.
7. Perform a full wipe on the Galaxy S3. Select “wipe data/factory reset” and “wipe cache partition” then go to “advanced > wipe Dalvik cache.”
8. Install the AOKP Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Select “install zip from SD card > choose zip from SD card > look for the firmware you’ve pasted earlier > confirm installation.” Apply the same with Google Apps package.
9. After the installation, go back to the main menu then select “reboot system now.”
The Samsung Galaxy S3 will reboot automatically and could need at least 5 minutes before reaching the home screen as it runs the ROM for the first time.
