2014 VW Polo Review: Just A Downsized Golf

The VW Polo is one of the bestselling hatchbacks in the world. While it might not be as fast as the Golf or as elegant as the Ford Fiesta, the Polo has its own appeals of being a sub-compact hatchback that has the technology of a supercar.

The latest Polo has finally arrived and as expected, it is equipped with most of the features on the VW Golf. As for the design, the team that created the Polo must have gotten too drunk and recycled the looks from the past, with some minor changes here and there.

Inside the Polo, everything is kept neat. VW has also got the colour combination of black and grey right. Over at the dashboard, there is a centre console screen, climate control unit and the gear shifter. The screen itself is somewhat basic as it does not offer satellite navigation. Then again, sitting inside the Polo can be very cramped, even if you’re the driver. However, the quiet interior and premium materials will get the Polo commuters comfortable in no time.

Driving a Polo is also as peaceful as it gets. The car is powered by a 1.2 TSI 4-cylinder engine. While it might not be as efficient as the Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost engine, Polo drivers can relax themselves as all they have to do is drive the car without doing anything much.

The linear power delivery comes at 1500RPM while power kicks in at 2000RPM. Heck, the Polo offers a faster acceleration than the Fiesta itself. In detail, the Polo can achieve 0-100km/h in just 10.8 seconds and there is a top speed of 184km/h. The masterpiece of the Polo is with the DSG six-speed dual-clutch transmission which is the best gear system in the world.

All in all, the Polo is as great as it gets but to some, it has been disappointing. This is due to the lack of improvements to its design and the fact that the Polo can be a dull car to drive. Also, the fact that it gets all its goods from the Golf makes the Polo a copycat by nature.
