The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is popular with end-users and developers alike. This popularity has meant that owners can update the device to Jelly Bean 4.2.2 even though the official bump up isn’t available yet.
The update can be done manually, by installing the Jelly Bean 4.2.2 ROM for the international Galaxy S2. Apparently this ROM also works with the AT&T Galaxy Note 2, the Verizon Galaxy Note 2, and the Sprint and T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2, as long as the device is rooted.
Make sure the device has at least 70% battery before starting, as power disruptions can cause damage. USB debugging should also be enabled: Settings > Application Development > USB Debugging.
Owners then need to download the ROM and read these instructions thoroughly.
One: Install Samsung USB drivers on your PC.
Two: Connect your Note 2 to your computer and then copy the right custom ROM and the Google Apps package onto the SD card of your device.
Three: Turn off the Note 2 and reboot it into recovery mode by pressing and holding the volume up, volume down and power keys after the device is turned off.
Four: Make an Android backup for your present ROM so you can restore it later if you need to. Choose “backup and restore > backup.” You can select “restore” if you want to revert back to your old ROM.
Five: In the main menu, choose “wipe data/factory reset” and “wipe cache partition.” Then go back and select “advanced > wipe Dalvik cache.”
Six: Return to the main menu and choose “install zip from SD card > choose zip from SD card.” Choose the custom ROM zip file you copied on your Note 2 earlier and confirm the installation. Do this again but with the Google Apps package.
Seven: Once the installation is done, return to the main menu and choose “reboot system now.”
Eight: The Note 2 will reboot and might take as long as five minutes to complete its first run of the latest ROM.
The Note 2 will now hopefully have Jelly Bean 4.2.2 installed.
