Samsung Galaxy S3 Maybe ‘Future Proof’ But Compared To iPhone 4S It’s Fragile

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been regarded as the most future-proof Android phone you can buy at the moment in terms of hardware. And in reviews which pit it against the iPhone 4S, it blows the device away. Of course that is unfair given that we have to accept that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is designed to go up against the iPhone 5, not 4S. Now while the Samsung Galaxy S3 does appear to be most ‘future proof’ Android money can buy at the moment thanks to its next-gen hardware, a recent test by SquareTrade shows us the difference between future-proof in terms of technology and future-proof in terms of durability.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 4S drop test

After copious reviews of the Samsung Galaxy S3, the iPhone 4S and comparisons between the two, SquareTrade have put them onto the next level of testing: The Drop Test.

They note that statistics regarding phones are that half of all devices cease to work, because of “drops and spills” whereas a quarter of all devices owned by somebody with children, have the device damaged by their child. Finally, one fifteenth of device owners damage the handset “either in or around a vehicle”.

In the video released by SquareTrade comparing the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S3 on the drop test, they use the above statistics as a baseline for the type of tests they implement. In the first, they have it dropped from ear-height onto solid concrete. The second involves children throwing the phone, and the final test involves the device sliding onto the ground off the boot of a car.

Both devices have similar exteriors, with a Corning Gorilla Glass screen, with a plastic casing on the SIII and a glass back on the 4S. Before viewing the video for yourself it is important to echo their sentiments that the Drop Test depends largely on how the device lands, among other factors, so not all results will be the same even if it is the same device each time.
