Galaxy Nexus Jelly Bean Update: How To Get It Right Now

The Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update is coming out slowly over the air, but you can update manually if you can’t wait. I’ve previously unlocked my phone’s bootloader and installed superuser, but generally I like to keep things as stock possible (no kernel hacks, no custom ROMs, no custom recovery manager). If you run a similar set-up, upgrading is simple and can be done without connecting the phone to a computer.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update: how to trigger it now

Preconditions:

1.           You need a GSM Galaxy Nexus (i9250)
2.           You’re currently using the latest Android 4.0.4 (IMM76I)
3.           You have the stock takju or yakju ROM.
4.           You need to have root access (su/super user is installed)
5.           You must have a terminal application installed (e.g. Android Terminal Emulator)
6.           You *have not* (repeat, have NOT) replaced the stock recovery system/partition with a custom recovery (like Clockwork Mod)
7.           You can spend around 20 minutes on this process

Steps:

Download the OTA update file for Android   4.1.1 (JRO03C) from 4.0.4 (IMM76I) directly into your phone (you’re actually downloading from Google not this blog).  This file is about 147MB so it might be best to do the download over Wi-Fi.  Update: The yakju OTA file is available as well now and the steps are basically the same, except you just use the yakju 4.1.1 (JRO03C) from 4.0.4 (IMM76I) OTA file instead.

Next Copy the update file to the /cache folder (this requires SU permission): Open a terminal window; su; cp /sdcard/Download/5c416e9cf57f.signed-takju-JRO03C-from-IMM76I.5c416e9c.zip /cache/

Boot the phone into recovery mode: Power off your phone; While your phone’s off, press and hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power; Using the volume button, scroll through the menu options and press power to select “Recovery Mode”; Once the Recovery Mode screen has come up (you’ll see a green android with a red warning sign), press  Power + Volume Up to bring up the menu

Install the update from the /cache folder: Use the Volume button to select the “apply update from /cache” menu option and press power to action it; Use the Volume button to select  5c416e9cf57f.signed-takju-JRO03C-from-IMM76I.5c416e9c.zip and press the power button to begin the update; Once the installation is complete, choose “reboot system now”

Disclaimer: If there’s anything important to you that isn’t in the cloud yet, back it up beforehand, as things can go wrong. It worked for me, but you never know! If your phone breaks, blows up or ends up running for president – it ain’t my bad!
