With the iPhone 4 bringing an all glass exterior, the Motorola DROID RAZR boasting a Kevlar rear plate, and the recently announced Tag Heuer Racer Android phone boasting a mix of carbon fiber and titanium, you would think smartphones have tried just about every practical material for their exteriors by now.
HTC One Series Android smartphones get micro arc oxidation treatment
Now HTC will make us rethink that with a new chemical process called “Micro Arc Oxidation.” Currently being used for the One series range, it means that we could see this new technique make its way to the likes of the DROID Incredible 4G as well as it will be landing here soon.
So what is micro arc oxidation? With aircraft grade aluminum as a base, HTC then fires 10,000 volts of energy into the material which changes it at the molecular level. As HTC puts it, it is “almost like lightning striking the phone.”
What you end up with is a material that is 3 times stronger than stainless steel, scratch proof, and has a nice ceramic feel just like the rumored iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 that’s sure to turn heads.
It is refreshing to see smartphone manufacturers try and use high-grade materials for a larger range of devices versus only their flagship. Well enough chatter, check out the awesome video below which shows the process by which HTC makes the covers for the HTC One Android series.
