E3: Schafer’s Grim Fandango coming to PS4

Sony scored a huge cheer from the audience at tonight’s E3 press event with the announcement that Double Fine is remastering Tim Schafer’s classic adventure game Grim Fandango for the PlayStation 4 and Vita game systems.

The news broke like most stories about a Tim Schafer project, with a laugh, as a Sony executive read out a fan letter purporting to be from a twelve-year-old girl. The executive pointed out the size of one of the thumbprints on the letter as the camera pulled away from its closeup of a letter held by a bearded Schafer.

Grim Fandango was one of the Double Fine founder’s projects while working at Lucas Arts. When the famed studio shut down it was discovered that the Singapore office had been working on a remaster of the classic game, and it seems that Double Fine decided to run with the idea when Schafer scooped up the rights to the title.

The original title was released in 1998 and was one of the last adventure games to enjoy a mainstream audience before the genre became relegated to the back alleys of the games industry – outside of Germany that is.
