HTC has just revealed the HTC One M8 and this takes over from the HTC One, which hasn’t even reached its first birthday yet. The HTC One M8 is a more powerful device along with being larger.
What we would like to know is whether the HTC One M8 is competition for the Apple iPhone 5S?
The HTC One M8 comes with a display of 5 inches and resolution of 1920 x 1080, offering 441ppi, which is lower than that of the HTC One.
Apple gave the iPhone 5S a display of 4 inches and this looks small in comparison to handsets on the market today. If you want a large display it has to be the M8, however the iPhone 5S does offer the 64 bit processor.
The HTC One M8 comes with the Snapdragon 801 processor at 2.3GHz and 2GB of RAM. But it isn’t 64 bit like the iPhone 5S. the Apple A7 chip does pull out all stops but it only has 1GB of RAM.
The HTC One M8 is 146.4 x 70.6 x 9.4mm, and it weight 160 grams. The iPhone 5S is 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm and just 112 grams in weight.
The battery of the HTC One M8 is 2,600mAh, which should offer around 20 hours talk time. The iPhone 5S offers a battery of 1,560mAh, which should provide around 10 hours talk time.
The camera on the HTC One M8 has Ultrapixels and it can take photos in 3D and refocus straight away after taking one photo, ready to take another. The camera of the iPhone 5S might be good, but it cannot beat that of the M8. The HTC One M8 has a front camera of 5MP compared to the 1.2MP on the iPhone 5S. Both devices can capture video in HD.
The HTC One M8 comes in 16GB and in some regions, 32GB. The iPhone 5S offers more storage at the top end but commands a price tag of $700 for it.
The cost of the iPhone 5S has been one of the downers for consumers at is comes in at 549 (16GB) / £629 (32GB) / £709 (64GB). In comparison the HTC One M8 is £535 SIM free, this puts it in the same bracket as the lower version iPhone 5S.
The two devices match up pretty evenly so it is a close one to call. It would depend on what you want from a handset. If you want a device that has a sleek build and good camera then it may be the HTC One M8 that comes out on top.
If you want a phone that is nifty and doesn’t weigh your pocket down then it could be the iPhone 5S.
