Towards the end of last year, we saw Microsoft stealing the spotlight with its Surface 2 tablet. After being stuck with designing softwares for so long, Microsoft’s gadgets have always been questioned by consumers. Surprisingly, the Surface 2 is extraordinary.
To learn how far Microsoft has evolved in the smartphone and tablet industry, we decided to put the Surface 2 against the great iPad Air from Apple.
Size-wise, the Surface 2 is much bigger compared to the iPad Air. However, it does come with a USB hub which gives the Surface 2 an extra dimension in terms of connectivity. On the other hand, the iPad Air has 4G connectivity.
Then there is the display. The iPad Air, as we all know, offers 2,048 x 1,536 pixel colour IZGO display at 264ppi. This is clearly sharper compared to the Surface 2 which offers 1920 x 1080 pixel ClearType HD display at 208ppi. However, consumers have to keep in mind that the iPad Air has an aspect ratio of 4:3 unlike the Surface 2 which is 16:9. The latter clearly does better at playing movies thanks to its screen ratio.
When it comes to design, both devices look great and feel great. It might be a hard truth to swallow but Microsoft nailed it with the Surface 2’s design. Of course, the iPad Air looks spectacular as well. Both slates are equal on this one.
In every contest, there is a winner and a loser. Obviously, the iPad Air is the clear winner. This is thanks to its performance, display and more importantly, the iOS apps store which has so much to offer. This isn’t the case with the Surface 2 which is still new and growing in the market.
Nevertheless, the Surface 2 clearly reveals Microsoft intent to compete in the market. The great perk with a Microsoft device is with Microsoft Office. Also, the PC like structure of every Microsoft device is certainly a plus point. It might lack some resources in certain fields but the Surface 2 is definitely a major kick-start to the Microsoft’s movement.
