Sony dropped a major bombshell at its E3 press event with the news that Paradox Interactive – the primarily PC publisher behind games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Crusader Kings – had all of its studios working on exclusives for Sony’s new console.
While only one game – Magicka 2 – was named, Paradox has at least two private development houses and about a dozen other affiliated studios. What isn’t clear is which of these count as “Paradox Studios” and which of these have retained full independence.
A conservative estimate would suggest that at least three or four games are in the works. That might not sound like a lot, but considering that Microsoft confirmed twelve exclusives in their press event it’s a tidy sum of games from a single mid-sized publisher. If all the developers in Paradox’s catalog are involved then Sony has no fewer than twenty exclusives due from the deal.
Magicka was one of the publisher’s best received games, winning hearts and addicting minds with its combination of goofy humor and a complex and fun magic system that jibed with its co-op gameplay.
The sequel is being developed by Pieces Interactive, which suggests that Arrowhead – the studio behind the original game – is working on a different title for the PS4.
