There are a lot of roadsters in the world today but none of them is able to sell more than the old Mazda MX-5 Miata. The Japanese roadster from 1990 is still the bestselling roadster in history and now, Mazda intends to give it a successor.
The next-gen Miata is rumoured to be due in 2015 and it will come with three trim levels. They are Sports, Club and Grand Touring. Also, the Miata will come with the hallmark soft top that can be folded in just 12 seconds.
Inside the vehicle, the Miata comes with so many tech upgrades there were absent on its predecessor. The list includes like heated trimmed-leather seats, keyless entry and Bluetooth hands-free. Also, the roadster is so well designed that even when the roof is folded, it won’t disrupt the 5.3 cubic feet of cargo space.
Under the hood, the Miata will be powered by a new 2L 4-cylinder engine that is mated to a 6-speed transmission. In figures, this will translate to 158hp and 140ft-lbs of torque. The engine will also come with the SkyActiv system that will optimize every drop of petrol. The upcoming Miata will surely be the most fuel economic roadster when it gets released.
Of course, power won’t be disregarded even when on the quest to make the Miata a fuel saver. The fact that it is 220 pounds lighter than its predecessor will ensure that the 158 ponies will run freely at all times.
When trying out the prototype, the Miata takes us back down memory lane with the sound it produced. The engine actually sings the same tunes like how it was back in 1990. Everything about the Miata is pretty straightforward that driving it feels like playing a video game.
Then again, there is no telling when Mazda ill release the next-generation MX-5 Miata. If the rumours are true, then we will see the roadster coming next year, with a price tag of $23,970.
