With the current reigning Android smartphone on the market arguably being the Samsung Galaxy S2, many buyers are making it as the natural choice when it comes to selecting the best Android hardware out there. While there have been close competitors such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the Motorola DROID RAZR, the Galaxy S2 continues to reign thanks to its excellent camera, speedy on-screen interaction and also that it is available across 3 major US carriers – Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile.
Wait for the Samsung Galaxy S3 or go with the S2? Neither
However now with the Samsung Galaxy S3 swarming the rumor mill, many users who are due for an upgrade right now are contemplating whether to wait for the S3 or go with the readily available S2.
To date, nothing much is known about the Samsung Galaxy S3 other than it won’t be gracing us at MWC 2012 in a couple of days but will be unveiled at a separate event later. So best case scenario, it will be unveiled sometime in March (and remember, we said best case scenario). What this means is that after it is officially announced, it may be anywhere between 3 to 6 months before it is readily offered through US carriers as was the case with the Samsung Galaxy S2. So realistically we are looking at in being made available late July to early September. That is a very long wait if you are due for an upgrade right now and you can bet there will be many other smartphones in between that will come and entice you.
So what’s the best solution? We would wait to see what new devices Samsung has to offer at the Mobile World Congress event on February 27. There are talks that Samsung may unveil an upgraded Galaxy S2 (galaxy S2 “HD” or S2 “Plus”) as an intermediate model to the S3. We have already seen a recently leaked WiFi certification document which shows 3 high end Samsung models passing through and word on the street is that it may likely be carrier variants of this device. It will purportedly boast a better display, possibly faster clocked-processor and may even launch with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich preloaded. While it may not be a quad-core phone like the rumored Galaxy S3, it will still be a major step up over everything else on the market at the moment.
So if you can’t wait until late summer for the Galaxy S3, try and hang on a week more and see what Samsung has to unveil before taking a plunge with the Galaxy S2.
