While the Amazon Kindle Fire was originally released with a custom version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a group of developers quickly took to rooting the tablet and slapping on CyanogenMod9 (based on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich).

When we last checked on this Kindle Fire Android 4.0 ROM, there were a ton of bugs to be fixed but now it looks like the developer community is getting closer to turning the $199 tablet into a full fledged Android Ice Cream Sandwich tablet.
In addition to now getting audio support to work, the new build has a few more key improvements. There’s a custom lockscreen which no longer has the camera option and instead replaces it with a volume toggle. You can also long-press the power button to bring up the CyanogenMod options like taking screenshots, adjusting audio settings, shutting down, or rebooting. We also find a few other things fixed like the screen rotation, Google Talk and running app previews.
However what still remains is the lack of hardware video decoding, sleep-related issues and no Flash video support in the web browser.
