Could the new dock connector on the iPhone 5, when it is released, have a 19 pin port that would be compatible, mechanically and electronically, with a standard Micro USB port? This is the question Gizmodo have been pondering over and they love the idea and so would fans of Apple and 3rd party manufacturers suggests the site.

The theory is that Apple could have engineered the new dock connector so that it would comply with European Union Directives to ensure that chargers are standardized around Micro USB. If so this would mean that it would be compatible with the European Standardisation Bodies CEN-CENELEC standard set, along with ETSI and the Open Mobile Terminal Platform.
It would also mean that it would be able to do everything that Apple, along with 3rd party manufacturers, would need for iPhone and iPod peripherals. This would include hardware controls along with digital data, video, audio and power. While all of this is speculation it would be excellent news for consumers as they would be able to make use of any Micro USB mobile charger to charge their iPhone 5. It would also means that all their current peripherals would continue to work with the iPhone 5, using an adapter (see picture below).
Do you think it is about time Apple dumps its dock connector and joins the other legion of smartphones (Android and BlackBerry) with a more universal charging option? Additionally, it would allow for a smaller port which could equate to a thinner iPhone 5. How can we say no to that.
