In the showdown between two of the most popular Apple laptops ever, the 2012 MacBook Pro 13” (non-Retina) and the MacBook Air 13” – the specs and design were compared by ArsTechnica (AT) to give readers a better idea of the differences between the two similarly-sized laptops. Here was the verdict.
13-inch MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air
The MacBook Air was abreast with the Pro in a lot of ways, and one of these ways was in the display. If you do a lot of visual work, though, then the resolution in the Air doesn’t make up for the limited color palette, so you may prefer the Pro.
The Air leads in the portability stakes as it only weighs 1.5lbs. A maxed-out 13” Air has an impressive performance to weigh ratio that the Pro can’t touch.
The MacBook Pro recouped this loss in a lot of other ways. It led in CPU performance, storage capacity and the amount of ports it has. It also has the advantage in the optical drive, its future upgradability and its expandability.
The MacBook Air is eminently portable, and people who are on the move a lot will pay the extra for this alone. If you’re always on the go you won’t miss the optical drive, the Ethernet or the firewire. Overall, AT recommended the MacBook Air, but thinks that the Pro is better value for money.
