Samsung has been frequently plagued by claims that their designs mimic Apple products. From the Samsung Galaxy S2 and its TouchWiz UI which has been compared to the iPhone 4, to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the iPad 2, the Samsung Galaxy brand appears to have an ‘answer’ to Apple’s popular iOS products.
Now Samsung Mobile’s chief designer has spoken up about the allegations and states that their Galaxy brand is not an iPad and iPhone copycat:
“As a designer, there’s an issue of dignity. [The Galaxy] is original from the beginning, and I’m the one who made it,” states Lee Minhyouk, Samsung Mobile VP for design, to the Chicago Tribune. “It’s a totally different product with a different design language and different technology infused.”
Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 to face off in 2012
Given that the just like how the Samsung Galaxy S2 was the biggest rival to the iPhone 4S, this year the Samsung Galaxy S3 is expected to take the fight to the iPhone 5. It unfortunately doesn’t help that the rumors of both devices suggest a 4.6″ to 4.8″ HD display and ceramic casing, but it is only natural that the latest smartphones share some common design ideas.
Samsung Galaxy range will be iconic like Apple products, but not so soon
While Samsung is confident about its upcoming products like the Samsung Galaxy S3, Minhyouk confesses that the company is on track to challenge Apple with truly memorable design, however… “I might not be at [Ive’s] level yet, but I believe Samsung will produce such iconic products one day.” Ive is of course the head designer at Apple and involved with the iPhone 5 design.
