With the release of the Samsung Galaxy S3, the war between the Apple and Samsung has been taken to a whole new level. While the iPhone 4S did have an upper-hand over the Samsung Galaxy S3 in terms of popularity last year, things appear different with the S3. Let’s weigh up the features of both smartphones to see where they stand against each other.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 4S
The touchscreen of the phones is the first thing to consider. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a beautiful 4.8 inch Super AMOLED HD screen of 720×1280 pixels while the iPhone 4S has a 3.5 inch retina display with a pixel density of 960×640. The S3 clearly stands out as having a better clarity screen however the screen of the iPhone is more portable and suited for smaller hands. The Galaxy S3 is still a winner in this front.
Design and form is another thing that users want and the Samsung Galaxy S3 measures 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm and weighs in at 133g while the iPhone is 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm, weighing 140 grams. While the Galaxy S3 is longer and wider it is lighter and thinner, the iPhone 4S has a better build quality and a design that overall looks more in line with what are premium smartphones. Winner: iPhone 4S
In regards to performance and power the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a quad core processor and 1GB RAM while the iPhone 4S packs a dual core A5 processor and 512 MB RAM. Both of the processors do a great job but as the S3 comes with double the amount of RAM and more powerful processor, it is clearly the winner.
Both the phones have an 8 mega-pixel on the back while the S3 has a 1.3 on the front and the iPhone 4S a 0.3 megapixel. In this category due to the better front camera and the fact that the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a zero shutter lag and burst mode, it does seem to offer more than the iPhone 4S and its 8MP shooter. Furthermore, a recent teardown of the Samsung Galaxy S3 reveals that it uses the same camera chip as the iPhone 4S, suggesting that it should have similar picture quality whether outdoors or in low light. Winner: Samsung Galaxy S3.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 runs on Android 4.0 and the iPhone on iOS 5. Both phones have the latest version of the software and will get the next updates in the future. This means that in this category they both draw.
The battery life on the S3 is 2100 mAh and the iPhone has a battery of 1420mAh. Due to the bigger battery on the S3 users get three times more standby time than the iPhone 4S. Additionally, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is removeable which is another plus point. Winner: Samsung Galaxy S3.
Overall the Samsung Galaxy S3 appears to stand above the iPhone 4S which is of course no surprise given that the 4S is now due for a successor (iPhone 5). So in conclusion, if you can’t wait for the new Apple iPhone 5 to roll in this fall, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is definitely a better buy than the aged iPhone 4S.
