BMW i3 had just bag an award for being the most efficient vehicle with 125MPGe rating. This is far superior to the Tesla Model S that is rated at 89MPGe. Then again, we tested both vehicles out and discovered that there is more with the Model S than with the i3.
It is true that the Tesla Model S is not as efficient as the i3 but the gap is not that huge. After testing out both vehicles, I noticed that the difference in energy consumption between both vehicles is only 16%.
Even so, it is worth noting that the Tesla Model S is bigger, and about twice heavier than the BMW i3. In addition to that, the Model S is more comfortable and powerful than the BMW i3. To complete the package, the Model S accomplishes about 265miles of electric range while the i3 can only manage 81miles at best.
Sure, efficiency is better with the BMW i3 but if that is the concern, then Model S owners are wasting $8 of extra electric cost a month on average. Well, with more range, comfort and power, even I wouldn’t mind spending that additional $8 on a monthly basis.
