General Motors and LG Corp have been cooperating together on electric vehicles since the announcement that LG Chem is supplying the battery cells for Chevy Volt in 2009. The bond between the two companies are getting stronger after LG Electronic was announced to be supplying the components for the upcoming Chevy Bolt electric car.
Moreover, LG’s components can be found widely in the Chevy Bolt, such as the battery heater and pack, power inverter module, new motor, on-board charger, electric climate control system compressor, high-power distribution module, power line communication module and accessory power module.
According to Mark Reuss, GM executive vice president of global product development, purchasing and supply chain, GM would not be able to bring the Chevy Volt to the market without the expanded relationship with LG. He further says that LG has been doing a great favor to GM and they are more than grateful for that.
Before this, the OEM-supplier relationship between the two companies used to be more like a dictator-underlings relationship, and that was a bad idea. What they need is a true collaborative effort together to make it work. Thanks to the long-term relationship, the Bolt project is still ongoing.
