It is no secret that Volvo is currently developing the XC90 and earlier today, the Swedish carmaker stepped into the spotlight to reveal more details on the SUV.
For starters, Volvo revealed that the XC90 is built to be the most powerful and fuel efficient SUV in history. This is owed to the brand new Twin Engine technology that is claimed to emit only 60g/km of CO2. Power won’t be absent as the motor generates 400hp and 640Nm of torque.
The Volvo is built on the AWD platform and is capable of accommodating 7 individual at a single time. The T8 moniker will also return with the SUV for the top of the range model.
The latter will drive on a hybrid powertrain which consists of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged Drive-E petrol engine that tows the front wheels and a 60kW electric motor powering the rear wheels.
To achieve maximum fuel economy, Volvo has tuned the supercharger to power the vehicle at low revs. Once the airflow achieved momentum, the turbocharger will take over. The electric motor, on the other hand, will offer immediate torque. Also, the XC90 can completely run on the electric motor alone, which can cover the distance of up to 40km.
Aside from that, another trim of the XC90 will be powered by Drive-E, 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. There is the D5 twin turbo diesel mill that offers 225hp and 450Nm of torque while returning 6L/100km, the D4 turbo diesel engine with 190hp and 400Nm of torque that returns 5l/100km, the T6 turbo petrol engine that generates 320hp and 400Nm of torque and the T5 petrol motor that offers 254hp and 350Nm of torque.
Of course, the XC90 is still in development and quite a distance away from its debut. When it arrives however, the SUV from Volvo is going to create new benchmarks in fuel economy.
