2014 VW Golf GTI Review: Entry Level Is A No-No

The latest Volkswagen Golf GTi is certainly a big step up from its predecessor but after looking at what its rivals are offering, it seem that the sports hatch has fallen in the pecking order.

The 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine offers 217hp, which is weaker than the 276hp offered by the Astra VXR and the 247hp Ford Focus ST. This is why we highly recommend VW Golf fans to pay an additional £980 for the Performance Pack.

Doing so will boost the VW Golf to 227hp and a 258lb-fts of torque. It is still not as great as the aforementioned rivals but the Performance Pack certainly ensures that the Golf is the smoothest of them all.

This is partly owed to the 6-speed DSG transmission which is paired to the Golf GTi. On the other hand, consumers can also opt for the traditional manual gearbox. Either way, both transmissions are wonderful for the Golf GTi.

The sports hatch also houses a host of new technological features. This includes intelligent cruise control, emergency braking and automatic post-collision braking. The Golf GTi is also considered as a marquee when it comes to offering great fuel economy without jeopardizing performance. The sports hatch returned an average fuel consumption of 47.1mpg.

The bottom line is that, do not take the entry level model Golf GTi or you will certainly lose out on the thrill factor.
