Samsung has already rolled out the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update to its Galaxy S3 variant. Despite being an official update, many owners revealed that the update came with plenty of problems.
Today, a remedy to those problems has emerged. Samsung Galaxy S3 owners can now update their device to the latest Android 4.4 Kitkat. Of course, this is only applicable if the Galaxy S3 is an international version; bearing the model number, GT-i9300.
The update is in the shape of a custom ROM developed by Omnirom. There are two sides of the coin on this firmware. The great news is that the firmware is not infected with bugs or bloatwares. The downside is that the video playback gets pretty messy and the camera basically fails to function.
If you own a Galaxy S3 and wish to update you device, you can follow the instruction below.
Checklist:
1. Only use the Galaxy S3 GT-i9300 international version only to avoid bricking your device.
2. Root the device and install ClockworkMod Touch 6.0.32 or later on the S3.
3. Backup every personal file on your device.
4. A minimum battery of 50%.
5. USB Debugging enabled. Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging or Settings > Developer Options > USB debugging.
6. A USB Driver already installed on your PC for connection.
7. Download the OmniROM 4.4 and PA Gapps to your computer.
Flashing Instructions
1. Connect the S3 to your computer via USB.
2. Copy the OmniROM 4.4 and PA Gapps to your S3’s SD card. Do not extract the files.
3. Disconnect the device and switch it off.
4. Enter recovery mode by simultaneously holding the Power, Home and Volume Up button.
5. Backup your current OS under Backup & Restore> Backup.
6. Install the firmware and Google Apps. Install ZIP from SD Card>Choose the ZIP files copied earlier>confirm installation. Repeat the same with PA Gapps.
7. Now clear your device by doing a factory reset.
8. Reboot the S3 and start enjoying your very own Kitkat.
In case the Samsung logo goes on loop, perform the following:
1. Wipe data
2. Wipe cache partition
3. Advance>Dalvik Cache
4. Install ZIP from SD card
5. Reboot the S3.
