2014 VW Jetta Review: Great Performance, Bad Design

The latest Jetta GLI from Volkswagen is truly, one of the best compact sedans in the market today. What is there not to like about the Jetta? It is comfortable, powerful and also comes with the world’s best transmission. Of course, the Jetta GLI could indeed use a bit of styling.

In detail, the entry-level Jetta has a price tag of $27,590 and it comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. For the DSG transmission, consumers will have to pay $28,990. Of course, buyers also get the option to purchase 18″ alloy wheels, navigation, bi-xenon headlights with adaptive lighting, Vienna leather, a power sunroof, and a Fender premium sound system separately. The complete price of the Jetta GLI still stands at $35,000.

Under the hood, the Jetta GLI runs on a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that offers 200hp and 207lb-ft of torque. Efficiency is slightly above average as the car recorded 7.5L/100km.

When getting behind the wheel, the Jetta GLI shows the driver how lively it can be. Then again, a lot of adapting is needed as the Jetta GLI is more sensitive than your average car. It has a sharp steering, sporty suspension and also paddle shifters that completes the performance tools. The Jetta GLI is also really good at swerving around from left to right.

On the downside of things, the C pillars can be a disturbance when looking at the rear, the cruise control function is difficult to access, there isn’t an automatic headlight and soundproofing is below par.

Nevertheless, the VW Jetta GLi is a true masterpiece. However, it will surely be challenged by the likes of the Mazda 3, Honda Civic Si, Subaru WRX, Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart and the Ford Focus ST.
