Nissan has announced a recall on its vehicles over suspected faulty airbags. The Japanese carmaker confirmed that over 52,000 vehicles from various models are affected by the recall and the issue is said to be linked with the faulty Takada parts.
The recall initially involved 30,000 vehicles as part of customer service campaign but after discovering on the issue, the company has decided to add in another 22,738 vehicles that are all from areas with high humidity in the US.
In detail, the vehicles affected consists of the 2003-2005 Infiniti FX35, FX45, 2003-2004 I35, 2006 M35 and M45, 2003-2004 Nissan Pathfinder and 2004-2006 Nissan Sentra.
This isn’t the first time the airbag manufacturer has been in the heat over unready safety equipment. Last year alone, a total of 4 deaths were recorded as a result of the failed airbags from Takada. Of course, this is currently being investigated by NHTSA.
Some analysts have tipped NHTSA that the airbags failed to deploy when exposed to high humidity areas. If this is the case, NHTSA aims to play it safe which will see Nissan being forced to recall a total of 1.1 million vehicles.
While the recall might be in effect already, the high volume of cars affected has led to a shortage of replacement parts. As such, Nissan took the initiative to get the affected car owners to accommodate themselves.
