The Samsung Galaxy S3 is definitely the biggest smartphone release since the iPhone 4S, and it’s worth all the hype. While most comparisons pitting both devices together always shows the Samsung Galaxy S3 come out in front because of its better hardware, there are more reasons than that to pick it over the now aging iPhone 4S. Let’s check it out.
They are two very different phones – if you like stability, simplicity and a smaller object, then it’s the iPhone 4S for you. If you want a bigger screen which improves web browsing and video watching, as well as innovative features not available to Apple users yet – like TecTiles – then you’ll want the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 4S
Samsung’s flagship smartphone launched in June on the four major US carriers as well, which stole a march on the iPhone. The Android Ice Cream Sandwich phone boasts a massive 4.8-inch HD touchscreen, with an impressive 1280×720 resolution. Although the Samsung Galaxy S3 is big, it’s not bulky or clumsy. It has a smooth polycarbonate shell and weighs only 4.7oz and is just 0.34” thick. The big screen – about the size of the entire iPhone 4S, fits the hand and the pocket really well despite the numbers. So what other features does it offer that make it unique and the best alternative to the iPhone 4S? Read on.
TecTiles – When the Samsung Galaxy S3 is placed against these tiny square stickers, it gets a brief command, like turning Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on or off. TecTiles use Near Field Communication tech, cost $3 apiece from the Google Play Store and are programmed by the free TecTiles app. Some are calling TecTiles a gimmick, but as the next generation of smartphones are almost certainly going to have NFC, this tech will probably replace QR codes. Companies can ask TecTiles to ask a user to follow them on Twitter or to like their FB page. These tiles can also write and send a text message or access a phone contact.
Endless customization – Android phones are renowned for letting users customize the home screen as they like, whereas iPhone users are stuck with the array of apps in grid format. The S3 goes one step further by letting users customize the lock screen too with fast camera access and a news feed.
Motion controls – These controls are simple and effective. Say you’re in a text message exchange and need to phone the person; all you have to do is raise the phone to your ear. No need for swiping and pressing, and it worked every time. The phone’s front facing camera also watches your eye movements (Smart Stay) so as to dim the screen when you look away and conserve battery life.
In addition to these unique features, there is of course the powerful hardware that not only has the Samsung Galaxy S3 outrun the iPhone 4S but also every Android smartphone available on the market right now. With unique features and unmatched hardware, it is easy to see why the Samsung Galaxy S3 is selling like hotcakes and will likely remain the best selling smartphone this year (or at least until the iPhone 5 is announced).
