The new MacBook Pro 2012 may look stunning but it is likely to be a nightmare if it comes to repairing it. This is what the gurus at iFixit have said after slowly disassembling the MacBook Pro Retina model. They gave it a shocking score of 1 out of 10 for repairs!
MacBook Pro 2012 model a nightmare to repair
While the Apple announcement of the new laptops went down very well, no one actually gave any thought to what happens if things do go wrong and you need to find the problem under the hood. The guys at iFixit have said that the newly designed laptop is one of the least repairable machines that they have ever come across.
One of the first reasons the MacBook Pro 2012 model has got such a low score for repairability is the fact that Apple uses “proprietary pentalobe screws” and these do their job and stop anyone from gaining access to the insides of the laptop, other than technicians at Apple of course. The RAM is another area which causes problems for repairs due to the fact that it is soldered on to the logic board. The battery is not held in place with screws, it is glued in. this means the chances of it breaking during disassembly are very high.
There is also the fact of the SSD which is proprietary too and at the moment it cannot be upgraded. What all this boils down to basically is that anyone who is a good amateur mechanic and takes pride in being able to fix problems with tech themselves, will have no chance at being able to make repairs to their 2012 MacBook Pro. Rather they would have to send it back to Apple and pay top dollar for their techs to carry out repairs. Maybe there is a reason behind Apple`s madness after all?
