What’s all the fuss about iOS 6 when Android Ice Cream Sandwich offers a whole lot more? That’s the general consensus according to ZDNet (ZDN) who points out that while Apple may be proclaiming iOS 6 is revolutionary, it isn’t anything Android users haven’t seen in some for or other. Read on.
The announcement of iOS 6 at the WWDC was welcomed but after all the fuss and excitement has died down you have to bear in mind that we already have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and this can already do most of what Apple bragged about at the conference. To be fair we will have to wait until fall to see all of the 200 new features Tim Cook talked about but he did mention several features that can be compared with Ice Cream Sandwich and they must be some of the biggest iOS 6 features since Apple chose to highlight them in particular. Here are a couple of highlights from ZDN’s story which shows why they aren’t exactly impressed with iOS 6 from a new technology point of view:
iOS 6 features already available on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich phones
Maps – iOS 6 has turn by turn and 3D, ICS has turn by turn, walking/biking/transit, 3D and offline coming very soon; Voice Control – iOS 6 has Siri while ICS has Google Voice Actions and S Voice on Galaxy S3; Email – iOS 6 features unique account signatures, limited attachments, VIP filtering while ICS has unique account signatures, full support for attachments, VIP filtering and the Gmail client.
Service sharing – iOS 6 has Facebook and Twitter, ICS comes with all social and cloud apps deeply integrated although they recently distanced themselves from Facebook for unknown reasons; Notification – iOS 6 provided reply by text, Do not disturb and Shade while ICS has Reply with text, Do not disturb, Shade and premium experience; Video calling 3G & Wi-Fi – iOS 6 has FaceTime, Skype, Tango and others while ICS comes with Google Talk, Skype, Tango and others as well; Lastly we have Video stabilization – iOS 6 comes with this feature as does Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
