Fans of Nintendo might be surprised to find that the company famed for its family-friendly approach to games is working on a multiplayer online shooter for the Wii U called Splatoon.
They’d be less surprised to learn the shooting doesn’t involve real bullets, as players of the Mario maker’s new IP will take the form of shape-shifting, ink-shooting squid.
Players change form between the squid, which is confined to swimming through its own color ink, and a human, which fires ink at enemy players and… pretty much everything.
The goal seems to be to dominate the map with your color ink, but the trailer (included above) is a bit hard to follow at times. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t look like quite a bit of fun.
No absolute release date has been set for the game, but Nintendo said it should arrive sometime next year.
