The Jury’s Out – The Mazda 3 Costs Too Much (Review)

The four-door sedan market is a big one and anyone looking for such a car has a lot to choose from. We want to know whether the Mazda 3 is going to thrive in this arena or whether its high price will be to its detriment.

The Mazda 3 is built with the new SkyActiv tech, which is one of the reasons it’s so pricey. This tech, however, along with the fact that Mazdas are built from the bottom up, is one of the reasons why Mazdas are so well-regarded.

The Mazda 3 drives very well indeed, with SkyActiv making the car very agile and responsive. Drivers are singing the praises of this car, although…
…they aren’t all that impressed with the comfort of the car. It has poor impact absorption and lets a lot of wind noise in. The engine isn’t especially powerful, either, although this is more to do with Mazda’s efforts to improve fuel efficiency.

Features like automatic headlights and wipers seem a bit superfluous. The Mazda 3 has a seven-inch touchscreen that controls the infotainment system.

There’s also plenty of boot space and a good audio system.

The Mazda 3’s biggest competitors include the Honda Civic, the Hyundai Elantra and the Toyota Corolla Altis. It does offer brilliant driving, but outside of this factor it’s a bit of a let-down. People like to get more for their money and anyone who values comfort and power as much as, or more than, the driving experience would be better opting for one of the rivals.
