Toyota sent out a confidential dealer bulletin but it turned out that it wasn’t all that confidential as it was made public in Australia. The bulletin said that Toyota Australia were looking into issues about some of the Toyota Camry vehicles having counterfeit airbags fitted.
The bulletin said that two suppliers have been fitting counterfeit airbag spiral cables, with or without them knowing they were faked.
This means that there are customers who are driving around in Toyota Camrys that have fake airbag cables and this means that they may be at more risk in the event of an accident.
Toyota said that the counterfeit spiral cables are not of the same quality as the authentic ones as there isn’t a gold plated connector on the faked ones and they are not as strong.
The Toyota Camry cables are asking retailers to get in contact with customers who may have faked cables in their vehicles and if so they will be replaced.
Toyota has lodged proceedings with the Federal Court against those that are supplying the airbags. At the moment no injuries have been reported associated with the faked cables.
