2014 Mazda CX-5: It Seriously Needs More Attention

The all-new Mazda CX-5 has been selling really well since it was launched earlier this year. This is not surprising as the compact SUV is truly something extraordinary. Yesterday, we got behind the wheel of a CX-5 and here is our take on the Japanese car.

In a single word, the CX-5 can be described as something perfect. It is a perfect family car, a perfect beginner car and even a perfect executive car. The ‘Kodo’ design is simply decent but nothing worth gazing at. The important thing is that the CX-5 is well proportioned. It doesn’t look too wide nor too tall.

The special thing about the CX-5 is the Skyactiv technology, which is truly impressive. This new driving system is the sole element that separates a car from its predecessors and touch on a new driving experience instead of the usual improvements.

The Skyactiv collaborate well with the engine, which comes in two variants. One is the163hp 2L petrol while the other is a 2.2L that offers either 148hp or 173hp. The unusual thing about the CX-5 is that it has a 14:1 compression ratio. Judging by the sound of it, the ratio seems like utter rubbish as it is too high for the petrol mill and too low for the diesel motor.

However, Mazda explained to us that the high compression for the petrol variant offer more torque. As for the diesel, a low ratio offer cleaner combustion reduces mechanical loads and the weight of the engine. This is something an average Joe couldn’t come up with.

The sad thing with the petrol engines is that they are not turbocharged. Yes, there is more torque but it is not really necessary when compared to getting raw power. The diesel, however, is a cherry on a sundae. It is smooth, quiet, efficient and offers a satisfying performance. Furthermore, the engines are able to achieve 61.4mpg and 119g/km of CO2 emission.

Inside the CX-5, it is as spacious as it gets. The CX-5 comes with plentiful rear head- and legroom and a nice 503-litre boot. Handles drop the 40:20:40 split rear seats for a 1,620-litre bay. The only discomfort is with the loud noise when driving the vehicle.

All in all, Mazda has got everything right for the CX-5. It is well crafted and best utilized as a family vehicle. The SUV should be the bestselling vehicle already but sadly, not many are aware of its greatness.
