In an attempt to “stop criminals” and to catch them for good, the government of Bangladesh has announced the ban of using social networking apps like Facebook, Whatsapp and even Viber. It’s caused quite a stir ever since and citizens of Bangladesh ain’t too happy about it.
There is a certain contradiction in relation to the actual purpose of banning these services. While the government did suggest that the goal was to stop the criminals, most suggest that it might just be putting an end to an uproar following the quickly-approaching executions of the political leaders that were accused of “crimes against humanity”. So which is which, now?
According to reports, some are still able to access Facebook and the Messenger (though only available sometimes), despite the unavailability of the rest of the site. Though it’s still unclear when exactly the ban will be lifted from the service, we certainly hope that it won’t follow the footsteps of China (where Facebook is still blocked, and will be, forever).
