Now thanks to the redesign and the release by Google of Maps 8.0 things have changed when it comes to the way that offline maps are saved and managed. Up until last week the offline maps were saved from the search bar and once you saved it for offline, it was there.
Now offline maps can be saved if you hit the user icon and the scroll down to the bottom. You can also find more by way of management, however it still isn’t the same as it was with Google Maps 6.
Along with being able to access the saved maps directly along with giving the map a name, offline maps will expire in 30 days from saving them. Once this timeframe is reached the data will have to be downloaded again. Map will try to force the update and you cannot access data that is outdated, if you have a connection-less device. This of course could end up being an issue if you don’t know where you are and you find that you don’t have a map. So if you do use offline maps make sure that the map data is available before you venture out.
