Over at XDA Developers’ website, there is a bounty going on for a Samsung Galaxy Z3 root to be created. In detail, the developer aims at producing a root without unlocking the Sony Xperia Z3.
There is a problem with the idea as a rooted Z3 without being unlocked will not be compatible with the Android 5.0 Lollipop. This is the price developers will have to pay if they are obsessed with keeping the DRM keys.
Regardless, the bounty is set and currently, the pot is holding $420. If the interest grows, XDA developers will surely to find a way to root a locked Z3 while allowing it to run on the Android 5.0 Lollipop.
The developer already made their intentions clear that they wish to obtain root access to backup the TA partition and DRM keys of the device. Once done, the creator will be able to unlock the bootloader with the official Sony tool to restore the DRM keys. In an event of a failure, the backup can restore the phone back to stock.
It is unsure on how much the developer needed but the website quoted an amount of $1341. For some, they don’t like the idea of contributing a couple of bucks to make it happen. For others, they feel that the developers deserve a token of appreciation for their effort.
