Oppo Breaching The Law On Purpose?

The Android system is based on the Linux platform. Hence, every Android smartphone developer are required to get General Public License V2 for each of their device before being able to release them.

In detail, the international law demands the smartphone manufacturers to launch their individual working kernel source code so that someone can compile it to develop another working kernel. Of course, such a law is not enforced in China.

As such, most companies in China have violated the terms of GPLV2 by not releasing their working kernels. Meanwhile, mainstream developers like Samsung and HTC claims that a 3-month time frame is needed to produce a working source code.

For Oppo, 3 months is too short. The Oppo Neo 5 has been released for more than 6 months already and there is still no sign of its source code anywhere. CyanogenMod developer, Brinly Taylor, is frustrated with the long wait and calls for some legal actions in regards to the source code delay from Oppo.

When the company from China was questioned on this, they claim that they are still working on compiling the working kernels and require more time for it. Clearly, a standard needs to be set so that Android smartphone developers can’t weasel their way out on legal matters.
