It is no secret that the father of Minecraft, Mark “Notch” Persson, is a huge fan of the Occulus Rift. The creator of Minecraft is known to be negotiating a deal with Occulus to develop a Minecraft-exclusive Rift.
However, things took a U-turn last week after Facebook Inc. bought out the Occulus company. Notch is not too happy about it and turned out to be the loudest voice against this deal.
As stated on his website, Notch didn’t have anything against a VR for social. In fact, social should utilize the VR in every way. Notch then revealed that he refuse to work with social as he wants to work with games.
There is a clear upset in the gaming community at the moment and the hero coming to the rescue is the modders. A fan-made mod called Minecrift will allow Minecrafters to play the game on the Rift. Notch gave the modders his full backing and the mod supports Minecraft version 1.6.4.
The base mod is able to track the player’s head movement and is compatible with the Razer Hydra. The latter is basically a controller similar to the PlayStation Move and the Nintendo Wii remote.
All in all, this is the first time that a game developer is working closely with modders. The last hope is probably with Sony. The Japanese company has already announced the development of its own VR, Project Morpheus. It could be the alternative to the Occulus Rift.
