No Longer Will Anyone Be Hurt By The Volkswagen DSG Transmission

Last year German brand Volkswagen revealed that they were working on a 10-speed dual-clutch transmission to include to its current line of six- and seven-speeds DSG gearboxes. Sources have now informed motoring.com.au that the DQ551 10-speed DSG will not be going ahead, because of a few different factors.

It was said that a source told motoring.com.au that it was very costly and complex to develop the gearbox which did not make it a practical thing to do. Therefore the brand have made the decision to put its attention towards other more crucial developments. Speaking to the publication in Frankfurt, the source said “In the end, we had to balance what our priorities were with our transmissions and other things are more important and more urgent.”

The gearbox they intended to use would be taking on up to 500 Nm of torque and could be fitted in either transverse or longitudinal engine bays.

Also, the main reason for the extra gears was apparantly to increase the vehicle’s efficiency by 15%.

It had been reported that the 10-speed gearbox would be used for the next-generation Mk8 Golf GTI and apparantly the more powerful Golf R 400 plus the forthcoming Polo. At the moment the brand have a conventional torque converter eight-speed automatic gearbox from Aisin which can be found on the second-gen Volkswagen Touareg.

If the information from these sources is correct then branda like Mercedes-Benz and Ford are due to be at the top when it comes to having the most gear ratios around, Mercedes-Benz installing a nine-speed 9G-Tronic gearbox to the Mercedes-Benz GLC and Ford installing a 10-speeder into its 2018 Ford Mustang and the F-150 Raptor.
