Owners of the LG G2 have waited to hear when they are going to get the Android 5.0 Lollipop update and while you cannot get the official version, there is a version under the counter.
The XDA Developers have made the Android 5.0 Lollipop update available under the counter for the LG G2 and it has been based around the CyanogenMod 12 ROM and Android 5.0 AOSP source code. At the moment this is an alpha port so bear in mind that it isn’t suitable for a device that you use all the time. There are some things that don’t work and these include the NFC, native apps, audio, airplane mode, notification and GPS.
To install the Android 5.0 Lollipop update on the LG G2 you do have to have a handset that is rooted. CynanogenMod will be offering fixes for issues and bugs along with bringing in new features. Handsets that can be updated with the ROM include D800, D801, D802, LS980 and VS980. You do have to flash it through custom recovery so you need TWRP, CWM or PhilZ installed. You can use Loki bootloader patch to install TWRP on your device.
Back up the handset with NANDROID and this allows you to restore it if you need to. You should also have 50% battery life on the handset and you can then follow the installation guide below.
Download the CM12 ROM ZIP file for your LG G2 variant from this link. Do make sure you download the correct ZIP for your device as flashing the ZIP meant for another G2 variant may cause issues or might make your device incompatible with your carrier network bands.
Download the Google Apps Package from this link. As is usually the case with CyanogenMod ROMs, the Google Apps are not included in the ROM by default, so you need to flash the Google Apps package separately.
Now transfer both the ZIP files to the internal storage of your G2, preferably somewhere you can easily locate, instead of having to go through various folders when choosing the files to flash them later on.
If you want to root the firmware, you can also transfer the SuperSU ZIP file from this link and transfer it as well.
Now boot your device into recovery and wipe cache, data, and system partition.
Choose the ROM ZIP file from the location you stored it in and flash it. The ROM installation should be complete within a few minutes.
Once the ROM has been installed, choose the GAPPS ZIP file and flash it as well.
When GAPPS has finished installing, flash the Super SU ZIP file to gain root access with Lollipop.
Congratulations when your device has rebooted you will have Android 5.0 Lollipop on your LG G2.
