Following that, you need to stop doing fast-travel and actually explore the wasteland. You should see this as a real happening and have to decide which way to go.
Also, it is best to turn off both HUD and VATS. No longer will you see all the information populating the screen. You will have to rely on your pip-boy every time to see the status of your character. Also, engaging random characters on an adventure will make you be more careful. There is no telling who the good guys and who are the bad guys.
Other things to consider tweaking in the game are limiting the weight carry to only 50 pounds, create a role playing character and avoid healing while in combat.
