Volvo is currently developing the XC90 and the SUV going to be something revolutionary. Just recently, the Swedish carmaker talked about how the XC90 will go beyond the 5-star safety mark and it got the automotive world buzzing like never before.
Yesterday, Volvo took the stage again and proudly confirms that the XC90 will be the world’s most fuel efficient SUV around. The company revealed that they had just created Twin Engine technology and it will be implemented on the top of the range XC90.
In figures, Volvo said that the Twin Engine system will ensure that the SUV will emit only 60g of CO2 per kilometre. This is truly impressive and it gets more exciting when the world learns that the XC90 has 400hp and 640Nm of torque to offer.
The XC90 that will be getting the Twin Engine treatment is known as the T8 variant. It will be running on the AWD system. The 2L 4-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged Drive-E petrol engine will power the front wheels while the 80hp (60kW) electric mill will power the rear wheels.
Of course, there will be switches for the driver to toggle between front wheel driving, rear wheel driving and four-wheel driving. Running on the rear wheel alone will turn the XC90 into a full-pledged EV that comes with a range of 40km. Otherwise; the rear wheel will be utilized to provide immediate torque.
The non-T8 XC90 will come in multiple variants as well. The models differ based on the engine they are running on. Some will be a four-cylinder petrol while others are identified as the diesel Drive-E engines.
Among them is the D5 twin-turbo diesel engine that has 225hp and 450Nm of torque. Fuel consumption remains impressive as the SUV can achieve 6L/100km. The D4 diesel mill that comes with 190hp and 400Nm can achieve 5L/100km.
As for the petrol engines, they are revealed to be a T6 turbo engine with supercharger and the T5 mill. The former offers 320hp and a maximum torque of 400Nm while the latter has 254hp and 350Nm of torque.
