Over the past couple of years, we noticed a growing trend among carmakers to reduce as much weight from their vehicles as possible to improve on fuel efficiency. Now, things have taken on a whole new level as carmakers are looking at aluminium to shape their future vehicles.
Lexus is no different as they plan to create the upcoming RX with aluminium. In detail, the luxury SUV will be featuring an aluminium hood, tailgate and closures. Aside from that, the RX will also be a 7-seater and draw inspiration from the Toyota Highlander.
Fans should note that aluminium is just for the body. Lexus aims to trim down the vehicle’s weight further by utilizing more mixed materials and resins.
The RX will be built at Cambridge, Ontario, and will still replicate the trim levels of the existing model. They are identified as the RX 350 and RX 450h. On the other hand, Lexus is tipped to create an F Sport variant as well. Regardless of the trim level, the SUV will be powered by an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Lexus will be unveiling the RX SUV mid-next year before giving the vehicle a global release in Q3 of 2015.
