Fans of Miata are getting ready for the reveal of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata on 3 September and already the rumour mill is going around with lots of unofficial information, which ranges from the big design changes to the SkyActive engine which is under the hood. We have also heard another rumour going around about the 4th gen MX-5 Miata and the fact that it could spawn a coupe.
The Miata coupe is said to be arriving around a year after the soft top version goes on sale. If the report is accurate then the coupe should go on sale at some point in the mid-2016s after a late launch in 2015. The report has said that the Miata coupe could be a lot more than a hard top version of the MX-5. It was said that Mazda are working on a unique fastback style for the body and it could take on the styling that we saw on the BMW Z4 coupe.
Customers have been waiting for the arrival of a proper coupe version; however this doesn’t mean that Mazda will be willing to offer them one. At the moment you can get the Miata in soft-top or hard-top and it is thought that the ND generation car is going to be true to its roots and it could arrive in a similar configuration. The Miata coupe may fill the gap that was left by the discontinuation of the RX-8. But what we want to know is whether Mazda would sacrifice the Miata and its long standing heritage, just for the sake of making profits.
The 4th gen MX-5 Miata could mark the return of the roadster to its roots, when it comes to size. Power could come from the 2.0 litre SkyActiv four cylinder engine with a 6 speed manual transmission. Mazda did promise the all new design language on the 2016 Miata, however it isn’t thought that they will deviate from the basic looks of the current Kodo styling.
