Last week in New York, Land Rover went out to unveil their next big release, the Discovery. The concept became the centre of attention due to its stunning design and fancy electronics that are developed by Jaguar’s advance research division.
Unlike its predecessors, the upcoming Discovery will come with a more family-oriented variant. It will be the first of many SUVs that will be built with leisure in mind instead of just being an off-roader.
Looking at the concept, the Discovery comes with a taller roof and alpine lights. As a matter of fact, the front portion of the Discovery is somehow identical to the Range Rover SUVs. As for the rear, it looks so much like the Ford Explorer.
The interior of the Discovery is fully customizable. The concept revealed that the seats can be reconfigured to free up space, or offer more comfort for the passengers. Also, almost everything in the cabin is stitched with Foglizzon premium leather. The choice of material is washable and a great oil and water repellent. The floor is made of wood vaneers to ensure that the Discovery remains to be a moving living room.
As for the technological advancements, Land Rover revealed that the Discovery will be equipped with:
– Next-generation Human-Machine Interface (HMI) technology creates a rich and truly immersive multimedia experience for all occupants, including video calls between passengers through the seatback infotainment screens, Smart Glass bringing the power of augmented reality to the entire glasshouse, and various functions, including the doors, indicators, headlamps and seatback screens, operated by Gesture Control.
– Remote Control Drive enables the driver to manoeuvre the car at very low speed while not actually seated inside it. Remote Control Drive has various useful applications both on- and off-road, from coupling a trailer, to external spotting during extreme off-roading.
– Visibility is greatly enhanced in all conditions wîth the powerful, day-like light of the laser headlamps, which feature intelligent object tracking and beam-dipping to improve driver safety.
– Navigating tight gaps is made easy wîth the visual assistance of Laser Referencing, which utilises visible lasers to project markings, symbols and imagery onto ground surfaces.
Since the Discovery is taller than before, parts of the front portion are made transparent so that drivers can see the ground ahead. There are also cameras under the front grille to assist drivers in reading the road ahead.
The perks don’t end there. The front headlamps come with laser terrain scanners that will render a countour map on the car’s infotainment screen.
Land Rover admits that they have gone too far with the upcoming Discovery but the whole point of it was to break every possible boundary. The Land Rover Discovery will be making its debut next year and it will truly be a revolutionary vehicle.
