20 years ago the ex NFL linebacker AL A.C. Cowlings took his friend, one time running back Orenthal James “O.J” Simpson down the Los Angeles highway on a parade lap that took them into the history books. You may or may not know that the car used in that chase was a white Ford Bronco.
The 1993 SUV was three years away from the end of a run of 30 years on the nameplate, which had been embossed into the pop culture since June 1994 forwards.
The chase did leave fallout and it comes nearer to the present than what you might have thought. Along with taking over the headlines on the day to the verdict in 1995, the chase has been the inspiration of the documentary series 30 For 30 along with many punch lines on sitcoms. Some people have pointed out that the demise of the Bronco was due to the fallout from the O.J Simpson trial; however the people over at Ford have of course denied that there has been any link.
Way before A.C drove the fifth gen model; the Bronco had offered a dutiful service for the company. The two door version of the Bronco was the primary offering of Ford up until they killed it off in 1997. The Explorer, Expedition, Escape and Edge now offer utility options.
We have heard that the Bronco name does still hold weigh among executives at Ford, however it seems that this is only in the daydreaming category.
The white Bronco of A.C may not have been the successor under production at the moment; however it seems that you can actually rent the original for private engagements. Ford did see a big 25% sales bump in the Bronco from the 1993 model year to the 1994 model, with units being up to 37, 367 from 28, 729.
