With every new BMW M-vehicle, there is always a constant increase with the engine’s performance and power. Now, this is no longer the case as the M-division has made it clear that they rather reduce the weight than upgrading the engine.
BMW head of M product management, Carsten Pries, revealed that they wish to conquer the league for power-to-weight ratio. Pries went on to reveal that BMW would rather have a car that weighs a ton than 1000hp.
This new direction will take effect on the upcoming M3 and M5. It is understood that the former is now lighter by 6% and it automatically increases power to 427hp from 416hp. The other advantage to this weight loss program is with the carbon emission. A lighter car will require less power to operate, thus saving fuel.
Word has it that the upcoming M3 and M5 will get the xDrive AWD system to accommodate for the loss of power. However, Pries write it off us a hoax. The lad claims that the xDrive weighs 75kg and installing it will defeat the whole purpose of the program.
Once BMW is satisfied with how the M3 and M5 weighs, they will be releasing the sports cars worldwide with a sales target of 5000units.
