The second generation of Ford Edge has finally been released and like its predecessor, the car looks to dominate the SUV segment. However, the Edge arrived with multiple trim levels which caused some dilemma to consumers on which trim to pick.
The first version is powered by a 2L 4-Cylinder EcoBoost engine that is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The turbocharged mill generates 240hp and 270 ft-lbs of torque. The EcoBoost mill also returned a fuel consumption rating of 24mpg on mix driving conditions.
Up one level, the Edge draws its power from a 3.5L V6 engine that comes with variable valve timing. This is paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission that generates 285hp and 253ft-lbs of torque while also returning 22mpg as it runs on the FWD system. Picking the AWD model will see the fuel consumption dropping to 21mpg.
The top of the line Ford Edge is powered by a 3.7L V6 engine with ‘active’ AWD and a 6-speed paddle shifted transmission. This generates 305hp and 280ft-lbs of torque. The Sport FWD variant returns 22mpg while the AWD returns 19mpg on combined driving conditions.
After testing each trim level, we discovered that the 2L Ecoboost Edge is the right version to buy. The small engine capacity is slightly behind in power when compared to the V6 but it confirms cheaper taxes and better efficiency. On the downside of things, the Ecoboost model cost $1,000 more than the V6.
