2014 Ford Ecosport Review: Great Performance, 0 Comfort

Earlier this year, Ford launched the Ecosport and it got a mixed reaction from the public. This is due to its awkward design that comes with the SUV. When examining the Ecosport, one can notice that it comes with a cartoonish face due to the symmetrical lower grilles.

Then again, the Ecosport is amazing as it comes with a super long wheelbase. The vehicle might be a sub-compact SUV but the additional length offers a larger boot space.

Like most other Ford vehicles, the Ecosport comes in three different variants. They are the Ambiente ($20,790), Trend ($22,290) and the Titanium ($27,790). Aside from a larger engine capacity, the latter is also equipped with alloy wheels, leather seats and extra convenience with keyless entry.

Both the Ambiente and the Trend will be powered by the 1L 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine that features a turbocharger, variable valve timing and direct fuel injection. This little mill is surely powerful as it offers 92kW at 6000rpm and, with a flat torque curve, pulling power is rated at 170Nm from 1400-4500rpm. It is also efficient as the EcoSport recorded 5.7L/100km.

The Titanium, on the other hand, runs on the 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine which posts 82kW at 6300rpm, 140Nm at 4400rpm and fuel consumption of 6.5l/100kms.

Driving the EcoSport can be a thrilling experience. The 1L EcoBoost engine might sound small but it is a mistake to underestimate its potential. We actually did that when trying the EcoSport and to our surprise, the engine actually performs like a 1.6L.

On the downside of things, the large tyre rack at the vehicle’s rear made it impossible to fit in a standard reversing camera. Also, the focus on the rear space meant that the front portion is too crammed up. Leg room can be a pain for the front passenger.

All in all, the EcoSport continues to impress the world for being such an amazing and reliable SUV. Ford has been on a roll with their vehicles over the last couple of years now and they don’t look like slowing down anytime soon.
