iPhone 4S Eating Up Its Own Kind, Effect Goes Further Than Apple Predicted (Report)

The Apple iPhone 4S has become a stellar sales success despite the disappointment when it was launched with the same design as the iPhone 4. In fact, it has become so successful that it is engulfing sales of its own sibling, the iPad 2.

iPhone 4S engulfing iPad 2 sales (report)

Apple saw its tablet market share decrease in Q4 2011 as the iPhone 4S proved to be its strongest competitor during the final three months of 2011, according to a new study from IHS iSuppli Research.

Apple shipped 15.4 million iPad units during Q4 2011, which was a 7 percent drop. The report also went on to add that despite the Amazon Kindle Fire launching at around this period, it wasn’t believed to be the reason for this decrease:

“However, the primary alternative wasn’t the Kindle Fire—which debuted to solid sales in the fourth quarter—but Apple’s own iPhone 4S smartphone,” Rhoda Alexander, senior manager, tablet and monitor research for IHS said. “The rollout of the iPhone 4S in October generated intense competition for Apple purchasers’ disposable income, doing more to limit iPad shipment growth than competition from the Kindle Fire and other media tablets.”
