If you thought the iPhone 5 camera and its HD recording capabilities were a huge step up, be prepared for another evolution when the iPhone 5 arrives.
Sony unveils new camera sensors, possibly headed to iPhone 5
Earlier today, Sony went ahead and announced 3 new back-illuminated stacked CMOS image sensors optimized for both bright and low-light conditions. The new sensors are not only quicker than its predecessor but also consume less power. Available in both 8-megapixel and 13-megapixel options, the sensors come equipped with the new “RGBW Coding” and “High Dynamic Range (HDR) Movie” abilities built right into the hardware.
As we know, the current iPhone 4S is using Sony’s 8-megapixel sensor and given that the next-generation Sony camera sensor is not only better at taking pictures in low light conditions but also consumes less power, it is highly likely that the iPhone 5 will come equipped with it.
Now we are all familiar with RGB (red,green,blue) so the new RGBW sensor is a little new. The “w” stands for white as the new sensor adds white pixels which in turn improve the camera’s sensitivity to light conditions. Another plus side to RGBW coding would be that no modifications to signal processing will be needed in order to be compatible with the new technology.
While it was easy to pinpoint the next iPhone release date (summer), things changed earlier this year and we could now see the iPhone 5 land in stores as late as Q3 2012.
